A Professional Organizer for 8 years (and a high school English teacher before that), I have been interested in the similarities between internal and external messes, how emotional and physical baggage can (and does) pile up, and how to help people lighten up the loads they have been carrying, whether in their personal space or in their minds. For years, I worked alongside clients who could not get rid of seemingly insignificant “junk,” but what I came to realize was that their “junk” was linked to important stories and powerful memories. In sharing these stories, people immediately felt emotionally lighter and somehow – almost magically – able to let go of whatever items they had been holding onto, sometimes for decades.
As for myself, after working with clients, I realized that while I appeared a savior to the disorganized, I – too – had stuff that I had been carrying around. Invisible stuff that needed to be handled delicately. Sorted through. So the stories intertwine, and I am sharing them here.
These days, I am back in the classroom, teaching college students to love to write – or at least appreciate the weight of a good pen. It feels right for me to be writing as I give them their assignments. But then, I never stopped.
Please feel free to share your comments with me.
